It was unexpected …

That now my parotid gland was swollen...

Sarcoidosis and the Parotid Gland & Its Symptoms:

Keep in mind --

That these symptoms can often occur along with signs of sarcoidosis in other organs as well, such as the lungs, lymph nodes, or eyes.

Typical symptoms indicating sarcoidosis affects the parotid gland include:

Persistent, diffuse swelling of the parotid gland—this can be painless or sometimes painful, and is often non-nodular in character.

Bilateral gland involvement is more common than unilateral, meaning both parotid glands may be enlarged.

Swelling may resemble mumps, with the cheeks appearing puffy.

Dry mouth (xerostomia) due to decreased saliva production is a common complaint.

Sicca symptoms, which include dryness of the mouth and eyes, may be present, especially if other salivary or lacrimal glands are involved.

• Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of non-caseating granulomas (clusters of immune cells) in various organs, including the salivary glands.

When sarcoidosis affects the parotid gland, it can cause enlargement, swelling, and sometimes pain in the gland.

• Parotid gland involvement in sarcoidosis may be part of a syndrome called Heerfordt’s syndrome (uveoparotid fever), which includes parotid gland swelling, fever, uveitis (eye inflammation), and sometimes facial nerve palsy.

Diagnosis is typically based on clinical findings, imaging, and sometimes biopsy to confirm granulomatous inflammation.

• Treatment may involve corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications, depending on the severity and extent of organ involvement.

In summary, the parotid gland is a major salivary gland essential for oral and digestive health, and sarcoidosis can cause it to become swollen and dysfunctional due to granulomatous inflammation.

Be prepared because not all Ear Nose & Throat Doctors Do Parotid Surgery!

So, I was forced to find an 2nd ENT, now I had to search for one that did Parotid Surgery. This is a reminder on #Due Diligence! When you have sarcoidosis.  xoxoLisa
