Ocular Sarcoidosis

Is not always confined to the eye!

While it can be the first or only sign of sarcoidosis, it can also be a manifestation of systemic sarcoidosis, affecting other organs as well. Ocular sarcoidosis can involve various parts of the eye and its surrounding structures.

Systemic vs. Ocular Sarcoidosis:

Sarcoidosis is a multi-organ disease characterized by the formation of granulomas, which are collections of immune cells. In some cases, these granulomas primarily affect the eyes, leading to ocular sarcoidosis. However, it can also be part of a broader systemic disease, where granulomas are found in other organs like the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, and heart.

Presenting Symptom:

Sarcoidosis of the 👁️

Ocular sarcoidosis can be the first sign of the disease in a significant number of patients, sometimes even before systemic symptoms become apparent, according to the journal Clinical Optometry. However, it can also occur as a later manifestation of systemic sarcoidosis.

Eye Involvement:

Ocular sarcoidosis can manifest in different ways, affecting various parts of the eye and its surrounding structures. This can include inflammation of the conjunctiva, uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye), lacrimal gland enlargement, and even involvement of the optic nerve and surrounding tissues.

Multidisciplinary Approach:

Due to the potential for systemic involvement, managing ocular sarcoidosis often requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving ophthalmologists; and specialists in other relevant fields based on symptoms of other parts of the body that may be affected by sarcoidosis showing symptoms.

However, it's crucial to remember that this doesn't mean the disease is confined solely to the eyes. Even if eye symptoms are the primary complaint, it's essential to consider the possibility of sarcoidosis affecting other organs and to undergo appropriate systemic evaluation.
